Towards the end of S2 pupils can choose to study Modern Studies in S3 and then later in S4 and S5.

Guidance and Subject staff will provide advice on the best way to proceed. [... more]

Level 4 @ S3

Pupils have to make a choice at the end of S2 about the subjects they want to study further in S3 and perhaps take it to the next level.

Extra Curricular activities
Who for?

Modern Studies as a Social Subject, is seen by employers and universities, as very academic with lots of merit. Especially in the way that it develops many transferable skills and demonstrates a high degree of numeracy and literacy.

The Modern Studies Level 4 course aims to provide pupils with a wide range of learning and social skills through the study of human activities and the way in which they affect each other

Throughout the course pupils are encouraged to work on their own and cooperatively thus developing initiative and a sense of responsibility. The course is based on three themes:

  • Democracy In The UK [Parliament, Government and its powers]
  • Social Inequality [Poverty, Unemployment, the Elderly, Housing]
  • World Power Study [China/USA...The Superpowers and their economy]

The course is designed to help pupils develop their abilities in the following areas:

  • Knowledge And Understanding – being able to take in and understand the most important points about the key ideas and concepts in Modern Studies.
  • Enquiry Skills – being able to give opinions and reach conclusions based on information; identifying the techniques required to gather and process information.
Additional Activities
Progression

Level 4 Modern Studies is a natural progression from experiences and skills learned in levels 1-3.

In S3 you will explore and learn more new skills to help you develop your ideas further leading to certification at National 4 or 5 at the end of S4.

National 4

Equivalent to General level at Standard Grade, the National 4 course consists of two units with an added value practical activity project.
