S1 Letter from Renfrewshire Library Services

Dear Parent / Carer

Renfrewshire school library service provides secondary school pupils with access to a well-resourced school library and the expertise of a qualified school librarian. School librarians encourage pupils to develop their love of reading and to become independent learners through research skills and digital literacy.   The school library is a nurturing space for pupils to reflect and learn.

Vibrant Libraries, Thriving Schools, the new national strategy for school libraries in Scotland recommends that local authorities implement a shared library management system between schools and public libraries to deliver effective and efficient use of library resources.  All new first year pupils will automatically become members of the public library service and will be given a library ticket which can be used in their school library and their local public library.   If they are already a member of the public library, they can also use their existing ticket in the school library.

Renfrewshire has a network of 12 public libraries and provides a wide range of resources including access to free online services including e-books, e-magazines, Britannica Library, and Issues Online.  Your child’s library card will enable them to search the online catalogue of their school library and the public library and renew and reserve books from home.  Using the library is completely free for school pupils and there are no charges on overdue items, or item reservations.  For more information please visit – www.renfrewshirelibraries.co.uk
